This past week we noticed that there were plants growing in the hallway by Mr. Holmes' class. Those plants were planted by Mrs. Sacchetti's class and Mr. Holmes class! The plants are being grown to put in the outdoor classroom when they are ready. They have planted a variety of sunflowers, hollyhocks, shasta daisies, purple cone flowers, and early sunrises. The kids will use them to fill the flower boxes in the outdoor classroom, which is right outside of Door 14.
I can't wait to be able to sit in the outdoor classroom!

Craig and Kate from the radio station WTBX are holding a reading contest for Iron Range schools. Here at Roosevelt, Mrs. Scheuring and Mrs. Sacchetti's fifth grade classes are participating. The contest goes like this: read as many books as you can. Add them up. The person who reads the most gets to have lunch with Craig and Kate!

They are important to measure where we are doing well and where we need to improve. Classes are preparing for these tests and learning about how important they are. I hope everyone does their best.

Spring means graduation, and for fifth graders, it means DARE graduation. Officer Nickila has been teaching students about the bad effects of drugs and alcohol. Kids have also been learning about peer pressure. Fifth graders will be writing an essay about their DARE experience, and winners will read their essays at graduation - which is April 16 in the auditorium. Everyone seems excited.
Yeah, I heard there was some excitement today when Officer Nickila showed fifth graders how his tazer worked! No students...just the ceiling. Thank you to Ana for this story.

The Virginia Blue Devils boys basketball team lost to Rush City in the section semi-finals at UMD. Rush City and Brahm played in the finals on Friday, and Brahm will be representing Section 7 in the state basketball tournament. Thank you Kody for this story.

Well YMCA soccer is starting up soon. There are several teams, from Virginia to Cook. YMCA soccer is for boys and girls, kindergarten through sixth grade. It begins on April 12 and goes through June 5. It's great practice if you want to play soccer in high school, or even if you just want to get some exercise! Great job to all the skaters who participated at "A Night at the Oscars" skating show last weekend. We heard they did a great job. Guests were treated to performances of Annie, the Little Mermaid, and more. And a couple guest skaters really made the show shine.

Last week, Roosevelt Elementary wrestlers got the chance to take on the Quad Cities wrestling team. There were two divisions to wrestle in, and each level had three wrestlers. So every wrestler was awarded first, second, or third place. This was their second tournament of the year. It sounds like they had a lot of fun!

Email is a great way for kids to keep in contact with their friends, and get writing and keyboarding practice too! You can get emails from anyone you know, not just other kids with gaggle addresses. And you don't get bad emails because they are filtered. There is one thing to remember - if you don't check your email for a month, you will not be able to log in. Check it out!
The Journal of Otto Peltonen is a story about a young boy from Finland who moves to Minnesota with his family in the early 1900s. Otto writes a journal about his experiences of moving to a strange place. His father goes to work at the mines in Hibbing. This story is interesting because it takes place in a different era. It is fun to see what life was like before cars, TVs and computers. This book is written by William Durbin, the author who recently came to visit fifth and sixth graders. It is a great book, You should definitely read it!
